aİç Hastalıkları ABD, bNefroloji Ünitesi, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Renal transplantation is accepted as the first choice for treat-ment of end-stage renal disease. One of the most important problems in renal trasnplantation is organ rejection. Several procedures and drugs are used to prevent rejection. Among these drugs, corticoster-oids, antimetabolites, calcineurin inhibitors and mTOR inhibitors affect more than one step of immune mechanisms, thus accepted as relatively non-specific immunosupressives. These drugs are currently used in most of maintenance immunosupression protocols. In this article, the mechanisms of action of these drugs, their role in renal transplantation and adverse effects were evaluated. Keywords: Kidney transplantation, immunosuppression, hydroxycorticosteroids, antimetabolites, calcineurin, mTOR proteinTurkiye Klinikleri J Nephrol-Special Topics 2008, 1:59-66
