Who Are The Potential Living Kidney Donors? Predonation Evaluation Of Living Kidney Donor
Dr. Şule ŞENGÜLa
aNefroloji BD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Living kidney donation is increasing around the world because of prolonged waiting times on the transplant list, severe organ short-age and as well as improved outcomes for recipients. Living donors may be related, unrelated, altruistic, or part of a donor exchange program. To ensure living donors safety, all donors must undergo a complete standardized predonation medical, surgical and psychosocial evaluation, receive appropriate instruction on providing informed consent and be capable of understanding the information presented such that a voluntary decision to donate organs can be made. The overall purpose of the evaluation process is to ensure that the potential donor is in good health, has normal kidney function and structure, and if there is a risk of development renal dysfunction in the long term after unilaterally nephrectomy. The living donor profile has changed over time to include those who are genetically unrelated. Although follow-up has not been long enough to be confident that various comorbid conditions such as essential hypertension, an increased body mass index, isolated hematuria, dyslipidemia and previous stone disease will not adversely influence long-term survival of the donor, reluctance to use organs from those donors is declining. Keywords: Kidney transplantation, living donorsTurkiye Klinikleri J Nephrol-Special Topics 2008, 1:10-16
