Comparative Evaluation Of Dialysis And Transplantation In The Treatment Of End Stage Renal Disease
Dr. Bülent ERBAYa
aNefroloji BD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Chronic kidney disease is a worldwide public health problem. The rising prevalence of treated end stage renal disease (ESRD) can be attributed primarily to the increase in the number of patients who start renal replacement therapy each year (in Turkey 11%), and to increased survival of patients with ESRD. The rate of new cases of both diabetic and all-cause ESRD has progressively increased. For the year 2005, the point prevalance of end stage renal disease needed renal replacement is found as 491 pmp and insidence as 154 pmp in Turkey.(Turkish Society of Nephrolory 2005 registry report). Survival probabilities for dialysis patients at 1, and 5 years are approximately 81, and 34 percent, respec-tively. Is the kidney transplantation a choice for the ESRD treatment? A successful kidney transplant improves the quality of life and reduces the mortality risk for most patients, when compared with maintenance dialysis. For recipients of a living donor kidney, patient survival rates are at 1 and 5 years 98 and 91 percent, respectively, for a deceased donor transplants, the respective values are 91 and 70 percent. Keywords: Renal transplantation, dialysis, survival ratesTurkiye Klinikleri J Nephrol-Special Topics 2008, 1:1-5
